I just finished a long week working in the ER and we are still trying to catch up from our August trip to Thacher Island. Most folks know that we spend the month as keepers' of Twin Lights on Thacher Island off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts.
This year the experience on the island was as different as the weather which was uncharacteristically warm and humid. We also had a visit from hurricane Bill. Actually the waves kicked up by the storm were fantastic and very hypnotic. I could have watched the crashing, churning and spray for hours and probably did. The power of the waves was hard to believe as I watched a large boulder being pushed up our boat ramp and eventually being swept over the side. I was awe struck to see the power of the sea. It was just great! Check out some of the pictures Darlene took on our web site at http://www.jfulton50.smugmug.com/ for just a glimpse at our awesome month.
We had so many folks came to the island this year the numbers beat all our previous records. John and Carolyn from Georgia came back for a visit this year as well as our local artist friend Debi. One visitor (Hollis) actually swam to the island and we kept him over night and fed him lobster and wine until we could get him on a boat for the return trip. Although the island is not that far from the mainland he would have to swim through the shipping channel. Many boats cruise through there on auto-pilot and could easily have hit him and we certainly didn't want that to happen. Hopefully he appreciated our concern. Two other visitors (Chris and Roberta) quickly became friends and were gracious enough to take John and Carolyn on a whale watching cruise on their boat. They also offered to take them to shore so they could catch the train back to Boston on their last day. That was a big help.
Back in Georgia.
Sunday a week ago, if you are from the south you know which Sunday, we were invited by our son James to his church to view the movie Fireproof. They have a large fellowship area with three large screens and a great sound system. Although the movie may not have the best acting the message is powerful and has a great message. I recommend it for everyone.
This past Friday Darlene wanted to see the movie Julie and Julia about Julia Childs. Since Julia was a fascinating person that I have always enjoyed she didn't have to twist my arm too much. We decided to take her mother who lives next door. A few years ago we had to take away Dot's drivers license for safety sake although she still feels like she should be able to drive. Darlene tries to include her mother in many of our activities as possible.
Saturday night we watched the Dawgs win a squeaker over South Carolina and the ever controversial head coach Steve Spurrier. The dislike for Steve has come from his coaching at Florida and the Georgia rivalry over the years. SC has a great team and GA was lucky to have escaped with a win. Football season has started and there just isn't enough time to follow all the teams and keep up with email. Such a deli ma!
This week the weather forecast calls for rain everyday so I'm not sure how much work I'll get done. John, Jr. is studying for his EMT exam and working at the local Do It Best hardware store so I'm on my own with the repair jobs. He and I are working for a friend repairing a rental house. I enjoy his help and company and he needs the money. With property taxes due soon I also need the extra money.
Darlene has to take her mom to the doctor, pick-up our granddaughter, and prepare for a Precept class on Wednesday so she is off and running. I may catch up with her for lunch.
Later...
John
