19 Sept 2009 - Friday

It was the day watch and I was working the ER. My partners were several and we were assigned to the Emory Adventist emergency department. Our doctor was Rathur. My name is John, I'm an EMT. Dun... ta dun dun... DUN.

Today started like most with a waiting room full of patients and many of them feeling the affects of the flu season and complaining of aches and fevers. Most were non-emergency ailments that should have been handled by their local physician if they had one. However, many feel that the ER is an easier place to come to if they don't have any money or insurance. This attitude fills up our waiting rooms with patients that take advantage of the law and abuse their right to be treated. Sadly this situation has been going on for too many years with no end in sight. With the status of the country as it pertains to health care this will probably only get worse in the coming years.

One particular case that was troubling was a young patient that had taken too many pills and was in need of true emergency treatment. Sad because the situation many folks get themselves into tend to leave them with the feeling that there is no hope and they succumb to this as their only solution.

My eyes continued to bother me even though I have started using a new prescription. I mentioned this to an eye associate that was passing through the ER and he said it may take a month or more to get any relief. Oh, lucky me!

I was certainly happy to see my relief person show up half an hour early. After quickly shutting down of my programs I made a hasty retreat home and some pizza that John had gotten.

Later…

John
